The church that I have been attending for about the last 15 years, one of a number of ultraconservative remnants of the Worldwide Church of God, which has ucg.org as its online address, is among the largest of literally just a handful of well organized, ultraconservative, first century like, Biblically restored churches trying to teach what Jesus Christ and the original 12 Apostles really believed and practiced according to what both the Old and New Testaments, and the highly respected Septuagint's first five books say literally in the ORIGINAL HEBREW AND GREEK, not the sometimes less accurate and occasionally even significantly misleading English translations. How many mainstream churches can make a claim like that? Answer: none, not even one. The now widely splintered Worldwide Church of God in the 1980's with its 150,000+ members attracted considerable attention from traditional Christianity because of its Biblically based teaching that more Old Testament laws really are still in force than what most Christians have been taught, which actually finally brought the Old and New Testaments into harmony. Yes, in past decades the WCG did make some premature, speculative predictions concerning end time Biblical prophecy. That is not sufficient reason, though, to reject the church's doctrines which can stand up to the harshest scrutiny. What caused that growing church to disintegrate, and to disintegrate for a very good reason? One man, Joseph Tkach, who became the pastor general of the one man governed church after its founder, Herbert Armstrong, died in 1986, was the reason. In 1995 Tkach radically changed doctrines around 180 degrees to anomos, liberal, mainstream theology. Before 1995 ended, he was dead. He died after boasting that God had not yet struck him dead for reversing church doctrines. One or more of his bones started growing again, and growing painfully. He died from what doctors call bone cancer complications. ................ Most popular churches generally insist upon using the English translations and the English translations only to support their doctrines, without an exhaustive analysis of the original Greek in some controversial verses, and some of their doctrines are quite inconsistent with the original language. Do you really think that you can trust most of the English Bible translations 100 per cent of the time? To see what anti-Old Testament leaning English Bible translators brazenly !! ADDED !! at the end of Mark 7:19 in MOST Bibles click the VERSES MAINSTREAMERS USE page and scroll down to item 2. Such an addition is totally intolerable and unconscionable. How could most translators, fellow humans that we normally trust, possess that kind of arrogance? How dare those translators tamper with divine instructions for salvation, twisting Mark 7:19 around to say what the original Greek and context of that verse most definitely does not say. Their highly deceptive comment about the dietary laws borders on the unforgiveable, although Jesus has of course commanded us to always forgive others. What else have these translators been able to get away with? More than most Christians are aware of, especially concerning the translation of figures of speech. Here is an example of a commonly misunderstood, mistranslated verse: Luke 23:43: "Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise," a favorite verse of mainstream preachers who, incorrectly, try to make Christians think they will go straight to heaven immediately after death. In the first place, the original Greek language does not even use punctuation such as commas and periods, so translators have always had to guess where commas and periods should go or place them where they wanted them to appear, which was a mistake in this verse as you will see. In the second place, John 20:17 reveals that Jesus, three (3) days after He was crucified, told Mary Magdalene "I have not yet ascended to My Father," which means that Jesus had not returned to heaven on the day that He was killed. Thirdly, John 3:13 "spells out" that no human (which would obviously include the thief), has ascended to heaven, except Jesus Christ, who was once human. A second example of a verse most preachers misinterpret, thanks to sloppy translation, is John 11:26, attempting to make people believe that they will ascend to heaven right after they physically die. That verse says in most of the English translations "and whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?" The original, literal Greek says "and everyone living and believing in Me in no way shall die for ever. Do you believe this?" The Greek obviously leaves wide open as the Grand Canyon the possibility of a prolonged state of death or unconsciousness before being granted life again and immortality in the first resurrection. "In no way shall die forever" clearly explains that the initial death, for the righteous, will not last forever, but also that death will most definitely occur first. A third verse popular ministers usually misinterpret is 2 Kings 2:11: "Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven." The Biblical "heaven" can refer to three general areas depending on the context, and the gaseous atmosphere surrounding our planet is one of them. After the whirlwind removed Elijah to another location on the earth, Elisha became the leader of Elijah's students and followers. 2 Chronicles 21:12-15 proves that Elijah was still alive on the earth several years after the high speed circular winds carried Elijah away to another place on the earth, not to the third heaven where God resides. Verses 12-15 above record a letter written, years after the whirlwind incident, by Elijah to Jehoram, the wicked king of Judah, telling him of impending dire consequences for his sins. John 3:13 settles the matter even more firmly by saying "no one has ascended to heaven but He ........ the Son of Man." For further study click ucg.org/booklets/HL/elijah-heaven.asp. A fourth verse used in an inaccurate, anti-Old Testament way by mainstream preachers, trying to make people think that many Mosaic laws have been abolished, is Matthew 5:17: "......... I did not come to destroy (the law) but to fulfill." The original Greek word for "fulfill" is pleroo, Strong's number 4137, which does not mean to replace, abolish, or substitute. It means to "make replete, level up, be full, perfect, fully preach, complete, or to fill." Fulfill means to fill to the full in verse 17, or to fill even more fully. Jesus added to and improved the law, filling the law even fuller by adding, for example, new adultery and divorce laws (basically, do not look at women adulterously, do not divorce and remarry for frivolous reasons). Another favorite, classic verse mainstream preachers quote trying to make people believe Old Testament law keeping has been done away with, totally ignoring the CONTEXT and some of the MULTIPLE DEFINITIONS of the literal Greek words in it is Ephesians 2:15: "having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace" (New King James Version), "He abolished the Jewish Law, with its commandments and rules, in order to create out of the two races one new people in union with Himself, in this way making peace" (Today's English Version). Analyzing the New King James Version, which is more accurate with respect to the original, literal Greek, the author Paul describes human traditions or laws (apparently the man embellished, burdensome Oral Torah) as "the law of commandments contained in ordinances." Context is very important to understand this verse. Verse 14 sets the stage for understanding verse 15. Verse 14: "He ........ has broken down the MIDDLE WALL of separation." The specific phrase "middle wall" is helpful to understand verse 15 because it identifies and concentrates only on a wall or barrier made by man, not a barrier made by God or His divine laws. The Greek word for "middle wall" is mesotoichon, Strong's number 3320, a special, actually rare word appearing only once in the entire Bible in Ephesians 2:15. The word mesotoichon was used by the famous Jewish historian Josephus to refer specifically to a balustrade in the Jewish temple in Jerusalem to keep Gentiles from entering the holy section of the temple. That balustrade (the Jews built the barrier because they wanted to, not by any Scripture) was definitely a man made barrier, NOT a divinely made barrier or wall created by any Scripture. The Greek word for law is nomos, Strong's number 3551, which usually is defined as referring to the laws of God, but not always. There are more than 7 definitions of nomos, depending upon the context of the verse nomos is in. Nomos can easily refer to man made laws. Three Greek words are used in the phrase "commandments contained (contained is a word added by translators) in ordinances:" entole, Strong's number 1785, en, Strong's number 1722, and dogma, Strong's number 1378. Dogma, translated in to "ordinances" appears only in the following verses elsewhere in the New Testament: Luke 2:1, Acts 16:4, 17:7, Colossians 2:14, and Hebrews 11:23. In every single verse dogma means only a man made decree or law, decisively limiting Ephesians 2:15 to only man made laws, not divine laws of the Old Testament. Finally, if mainstream Christians are correct in their belief this verse abolishes laws created by God, they seem to forget that Ephesians 2:15 is quite nonspecific about which divine laws were abolished -- newly added or listed New Testament laws could just as easily be the laws that were included in the Old Testament laws that were supposedly "abolished." Plenty of New Testament verses, though, of course sternly warn us not to break divine laws, including those listed in the New Testament, making the reasoning of mainstream Christians even more flawed. ......... One more classic verse anomos, abolished laws preaching ministers try to beat into their listeners' minds is Colossians 2:14: "having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross," which, in the original Greek, refers VERY SPECIFICALLY to the past record or evidence of our sins, not the still binding holy law itself. A disinterested, but informed observer, aware of Jesus' dire, terrifying warning to those whose lifestyles embrace anomia, risking an agonizingly lethal punishment, and keeping in mind the idea that when you're dealing with eternity, it is much better to err on the side of caution, especially since 1 Peter 4:18 says that the righteous will barely (with difficulty or with much work) be saved, would probably say that for someone who is seriously seeking immortality, one of these first century like, restored churches mentioned below is far, far safer to be in than in any mainstream, traditional church. The members, in general, of these churches will not, it seems, be condemned for anomia because they still obey the Mosaic dietary, festival, and various tithing laws, and so on, as well as the newer New Testament laws, giving them a high margin of priceless safety mainstream Christians simply do not have. No human really knows just how severe the judgment will be in Matthew 7:23. Even in the extremely unlikely event these New and Old Testament observing churches are wrong, all of their members should still make it into God's kingdom since over-righteousness is rarely if ever sinful, but under-righteousness is always sinful. These conservative churches that are not well known yet, have over twenty thousand members and supporters around the globe. If you have even the slightest concern about being possibly, unexpectedly accused by Jesus on Judgment Day for "practicing lawlessness (anomia)," the mysterious verse most Christian ministers have considerable trouble explaining when confronted with the original Greek in Matthew 7:21-23, seriously consider investigating further these churches of ultimate safety. If you live too far away from a local congregation to attend weekly Saturday church services, as a baptized church member you can probably at least attend services on the much more important annual holy days, such as the Biblically commanded 24 hour foodless and waterless fasting Day of Atonement and the week long eat, drink, and be merry Feast of Tabernacles. These safe haven churches include 1) the United Church of God, an International Association, 2) the Church of God, a Worldwide Association, 3) the Restored Church of God and 4) the Philadelphia Church of God. A number of other excellent remnants of the former Worldwide Church of God, a righteous, truly Bible obeying church (a rarity in this liberal minded, evolutionist age of anomos churches), exist, but I am most familiar with these four churches, which are among the largest of the WCG splinter churches. These four churches, high and dry in a sea of mainstream, popular churches drowning in their own lethal, anomos, Matthew 7:21-23 ignoring, religious holiday inventing, toxic food chewing, homicidal denial of the food tithe to the starving, rebellious liberalism, have branch churches in and close to many large north American cities, including a large number of big foreign cities. The United Church of God, the church I have been attending for years, is governed by a council of 12 elders, chosen by the elders in all the local churches. The newer Church of God, a Worldwide Association, the church I have been attending most recently, created around January, 2011, will be governed by an elected committee of seven ministers. This new church has the most "open door" policy, it seems, of all these churches. The Restored Church of God and the Philadelphia Church of God are governed by one pastor general, David Pack and Gerald Flurry, respectively. Some excellent first century churches were led by one man. ................ Many people seem to be totally unaware that 1) PLENTY of scientific evidence is available that thoroughly refutes evolutionism, a major if not the major cause of widespread distrust in the accuracy and authority of the Bible. The Bible has vastly more scientifically and historically accurate information and fulfilled predictions than any other major religious document, which makes it overwhelmingly the logical guide to salvation. 2) TITHING exists, including the financial blessings packed third year food tithe for the hungry (Deuteronomy 14:28-29 [a major reason for the prosperity of the Jewish people {this is the largest religious group that still diligently obeys this law}, which in turn is a jealousy induced contributing cause of persecution]), usually carrying noticeable financial blessings or often unrecognized curses such as homelessness for nontithing (Malachi 3:8,9). 3) FAR TOO MANY REFUTING VERSES exist in the Bible to safely conclude that mainstream Christendom is correct in its teaching that the civil and moral laws of Moses have really been abolished. The sacrificial laws with their ceremonial rituals of slaughtering animals and sacrificing grain, and circumcision, are basically the only laws that have been nullified. Therefore cautious Christians need to more fully analyze the often anti-Old Testament English translated Biblical verses mainstream Christians steadfastly insist on twisting out of context and/or using ignoring the original Greek to try to prove most of the Mosaic laws have been abolished. Is it not an act of SUPREME INSANITY to say that the Mosaic laws which include forbidding incest, forbidding sex with animals, forbidding eating animals that have been torn apart by wild animals, forbidding eating certain brightly colored South American frogs (some can kill 10 men with their skin poison that even if boiled can remain potent for a year), and requiring payment of the third year food tithe to the starving (which if obeyed by the world's major religions could have saved over an estimated, thoroughly mind numbing 350 million people from starving to death since 500 A.D.), have been done away with? Think about it. Also, 4) NOT ENOUGH EVIDENCE EXISTS to decisively conclude that Jesus really was resurrected anytime on a Sunday, a critically important doctrine of mainstream Christianity, which means that there is no potentially tempting justification to switch to Sunday rest, to "honor Jesus by resting on Sundays." The 3 DAY 3 NIGHT PROPHECY OF JESUS that He would be in the tomb 3 days and 3 nights (Matthew 12:40) more than likely means that He was buried late on a Wednesday evening and resurrected on a Saturday shortly before sunset, instantly collapsing any support for Sunday rest, including man made Easter. If you attend church on Sundays and observe Easter, you need to devote several days or more of intense, open minded study about which day Jesus was resurrected on, concentrating on Jesus' all important, make or break 3 day, 3 night prophecy, a relatively easy task now with the internet. Click the SATURDAY RESURRECTION page to read about Jesus' statement that He would be in the tomb three days and three nights before He was resurrected, three full days and three full nights, which would exclude Saturday night since He was resurrected before the sun rose on Sunday. So IF He was buried on a Friday He would have risen after sunrise Monday morning! Skeptics have desperately tried to get around the 3 night prophecy, but they just cannot do it. Even if Jesus' prediction that He would be in the tomb 3 nights is off by an entire night due to figure of speech, translation or interpretation errors, He still could not have been buried on a Friday since He would have had to have spent all of Friday night and all of Saturday night in the tomb. The Bible records, though, that He most definitely was not, repeat, was not in the tomb all of Saturday night according to John 20:1. The fact that mainstream Christendom is probably wrong about this issue is a strong tip that it is also probably wrong about some of its other major teachings, too. ................. Most Christians who have been baptized probably still lack the Holy Spirit because of disobedience to Biblical laws: Acts 5:32: "....... the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to them that OBEY Him." This verse strongly implies that the Holy Spirit is not given to disobedient Christians, which means that they cannot even "get to first base" when it comes to salvation. Far too few Christians know what the original Greek word "anomia" means and the ominous range of definitions of another Greek word, "polus" as they appear in Matthew 7:13-14,21-23, and 13:41-42. Few Christians are aware that the same polus word translated "many" in verse 7:22 also appears in Matthew 7:13-14 and in another half a dozen verses loosely translated "many," but clearly indicating the majority according to the context. That means verse 7:22's "many" could refer to the majority of gentile Christians, showing that they may not be able to enter God's Kingdom because of their anomos sins. ............... All scientific and historical statements in this site are accurate and well documented. The general attitude of most of my fellow church members is that nothing will stop them from obeying, or at least trying to obey, all of God's laws in their quest to be in the first resurrection. The 13 Mosaic, annual feast/holy days that take them away from their jobs are considered pleasurable, not burdensome. After all, who really wants to work, anyway? We, the saved, if we're going to live forever in pleasure without the need to work, might as well start getting used to free time anyway, which is one of the ways I look at it. The above laws will not, by themselves, save us, but they will help guarantee a more HOLY, SAINTLY, healthy, and prosperous lifestyle after repentance and baptism, a strict requirement Jesus insists upon according to just too many explicit Biblical verses that a cautious person simply cannot walk away from and totally ignore. Those explicit verses, especially those about diet and the Saturday Sabbath in Isaiah 66:17-23, refer to certain Old Testament laws that are obviously still valid because they refer to a distant time in the future when everyone will be FORCED to observe them in an age that has not yet arrived, making the reasoning of those who would vainly argue that they had been abolished, still using, incredibly, INADEQUATELY researched verses and completely ignoring others, including, again incredibly, even the very words of Jesus Himself, look like the kind of reasoning only the unwise would use. The much better New Covenant now makes available complete forgiveness of sins and immortality through the gifts of the sacrificial death of Jesus and the Holy Spirit, which were not part of the Old Covenant. The Old Covenant promised only physical blessings for obedience to God's laws. The sacrificial death of Jesus has opened the door to salvation now. When the Mosaic laws, excluding the animal and grain sacrifice and circumcision laws, are acknowledged as still valid, the entire holy Bible, both the New and Old Testaments, then finally becomes harmonious, as it of course should be, instead of frequently self contradictory, and Jesus' dire warning in Matthew 7:21-23, using the anomia word, about living apart from the Mosaic laws becomes more understandable. Throughout this site anomia always appears in red to help emphasize the potentially disastrous consequences of being ultimately, unexpectedly judged guilty of a lifestyle that embraced anomia.
